Craig Burley has told Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse to ‘make the move’ and secure a transfer to West Ham United.

This is despite the bombshell claim of David Moyes being told ‘no’ about signing James Ward-Prowse by West Ham United’s new director of football, Tim Steidten, as he told ESPN.

With the new Premier League season one week away, those at the London Stadium, after selling Declan Rice for a record amount to Arsenal, haven’t signed anyone of note.

That is only adding further anger and frustration for the fans, who watched their team get walloped 4-0 by Bayern Leverkusen in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

This isn’t ideal preparations at all because, whilst the Hammers enjoyed that Europa Conference League win in Prague, they need to remember that, for the marathon of the Premier League campaign, they were awful last time out.

Nonetheless, former Scotland international Burley backed Ward-Prowse to join, despite the situation surrounding his fellow countryman.

“I would look to make a move,” said Burley. “West Ham have been trying to sign him. Have you been reading this story?

“A recently-appointed director of football by David Sullivan, I believe, and he is vetoing everything David Moyes wants to do. They haven’t signed one single player and they have sold Declan Rice for a record amount of money, off the back of their first European trophy in years.

“So, James Ward-Prowse is somebody who has been on their radar. David Moyes has been told ‘no’. But if I was Ward-Prowse, he needs to get playing.”

Ward-Prowse in the Championship

The England international is getting on with his work, putting his head down and getting those much-needed points on the board for Southampton – On top of the ‘fantastic’ Ward-Prowse, Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has also been backed to join.

Russell Martin’s side opened their Championship account on Friday night by beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, with Ward-Prowse supplying a very well-worked assist for Che Adams’ late winner.

If the Saints manage to keep their captain on board, then you can probably book their promotion ticket, that’s why it’s paramount they do everything they can to starve away any interest for the player.
