By time Tottenham brought on England international Harry Winks they were already 2-0 down, with the youngster replacing a flagging Mousa Dembele.
Burley felt that leaving out Winks was a poor decision, but insisted it was Moussa Sissoko who never should have been picked.
He told ESPN: “I couldn’t understand the inclusion of Sissoko ahead of Winks. May be he wanted to go for power, it certainly wasn’t anything to do with subtlety or controlling the game I can tell you that.
“Winks is very clever on the ball, he brings the likes of Eriksen into the game. Sissoko hasn’t got it. That’s where Arsenal were able to dominate.”
Winks was beginning to establish himself as an automatic pick in midfield for Tottenham but sustained a minor injury which kept him out of the recent England games.
Considering Spurs were already rushing Harry Kane back, Mauricio Pochettino may have deliberately not wanted to rush back both players to start.
Also factoring into Tottenham’s team selection would have been their match against Dortmund tonight just days after the derby.
