Rangers earned an excellent 3-1 win over Hearts on Sunday.
Rangers’ excellent 3-1 win over Hearts on Sunday afternoon at Ibrox will have pleased many fans, players and staff like as they earned what is likely to be seen as their best league result of the season – but for Eros Grezda it will have been bittersweet.
The 23-year-old winger, who joined Rangers towards the end of the transfer window from Croatian side NK Osijek, was let out of Steven Gerrard’s 18-man squad to face Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts.
The seven-time Albania international has been available for the last seven matches, but has played just 53 minutes of football in two appearances for Rangers – being left on the bench three times and not making the squad twice.
He failed to make the cut to face Hearts, with Gerrard opting to name Glenn Middleton and Kyle Lafferty as attacking options as substitutes. Only Lafferty made an appearance, with Andy Halliday and Ryan Jack also coming off the bench.
Grezda cost Rangers a whopping £1.8million (Scottish Sun) after Gerrard decided that the Gers required another winger after Jamie Murphy suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Kilmarnock.
But such a figure is certainly an expensive one for a club like Rangers, who spent around £11million in transfer fees this summer including the purchase of Grezda.
So, with his lack of involvement and his inability to break into the Gers side as of yet, did Gerrard and Rangers overspend on the injury-prone star?
Certainly, Grezda has it all to do to prove to fans and the club that he is worthy of his transfer fee, but he is yet to find a breakthrough when it comes to being given minutes in the senior side.
