Liverpool managed to resist Barcelona’s £138 million offer for Coutinho this summer, and the Catalans are expected to ramp up their attempts to spend their Neymar money in January and next summer.

The Mail reported last week that Barcelona have been scouting Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen as a potential alternative.

The Mirror reported in June how Eriksen admitted he would be tempted by Barcelona, and this is a scenario which Tottenham need to get ahead of.

While he is under contract at Spurs, so was Gareth Bale, and when a dream club comes calling, their star man could be vulnerable and force a move. Eriksen is not like Harry Kane, a boyhood Spurs fan who would be more resistant to leaving.

When Tottenham sold Bale, they blundered in spending the money on seven players, of which just two remain at the club, but one was Eriksen, and he has proved a shrewd addition and become the key to the team’s attack.

Tottenham need to start looking for a potential successor to Christian Eriksen now, who they can buy for a cheaper fee than be stuck in a scenario like Barcelona, when they sell a prize asset and then are left facing inflated fees for their own transfer targets.

This may be a young raw talent like Norwich’s James Maddison, or a more established attacker like Lyon’s Nabil Fekir.

Tottenham have been forewarned about Barcelona’s interest in Eriksen, and one way or another, they have to start planning.

If they make their move first and sign the player first, they will be in a far stronger position.
