Erik Sviatchenko wants to remain at Celtic for the foreseeable future.
Sviatchenko joined Scottish Premiership giants Celtic from Danish side FC Midtjylland in January 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £1.5 million.
The 25-year-old is a good central defender, but the Denmark international is not guaranteed a place in Brendan Rodgers’s starting lineup.
The centre-back struggled to play regularly for the Hoops in the second half of last season, and one suspects that he will find it tough to feature prominently for the Glasgow giants during the 2017-18 campaign.
Sviatchenko’s current contract with Celtic runs until June 2020, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, but could the defender leave the Hoops in the summer transfer window?
The Denmark international centre-back has ruled out leaving Celtic in the summer, and he seems determined to earn his place in Rodgers’s starting lineup next season.
“That’s not in my thoughts at all at the moment,” Sviatchenko told The Daily Record regarding leaving Celtic in the summer transfer window. “I’m just focusing on getting my fitness back and having my thoughts on pre-season with Celtic.
“I have developed really well over the last couple of months. It has almost been one and a half years since I joined Celtic. From where I was before to where I am now is miles apart. I’m looking at the small steps.”
“In the transfer windows there will always be talk and rumours, some of them are true and some of them are untrue but you need to stay focused,” added Sviatchenko.
“I’m in a place where I have good players and managers around me, they know me and I’m the best player I can be so I’m enjoying the time here.”
