The Celtic striker proved to be the difference again over the weekend.

Celtic's Moussa Dembele scores their first goal

Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has told the Daily Mail that Moussa Dembele has already proved he can keep up his high performance levels.

The striker joined the club in the summer transfer window in a move from Championship side Fulham.

He has been an instant hit in Scotland with 14 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Dembele’s latest impressive performance came on Sunday afternoon as he scored a superb late winner to secure his team a 1-0 win over Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

Celtic will be hoping he can keep that up for the rest of the season, although Sviatchenko says he has already proved he maintain his high performance levels.

“He has great potential and he is only 20 years old,” he told the Daily Mail.

“For Moussa, it’s about keeping that high level every time, even though young players sometimes drop their performances. He’s proven that he can maintain that high level.”

The defender has also praised Dembele for electing to make the move to Celtic in the first place.

After impressing in the Championship with Fulham, for whom he scored 19 goals in 64 appearances in all competitions, the Frenchman had plenty of admirers this summer.

He chose to go to Celtic in the knowledge he stood a strong chance of regular first-team football and Sviatchenko has praised him for thinking about that next step.

“I think it shows a high level from Celtic to have a high-level player like that, but also Moussa did well in how he was thinking about his next step,” he added.

“He maybe could have gone to a club down south in a better league, but he’s shown he wants to improve and be better. That’s the right thing to do here.”
