Would Erik Sviatchenko fancy a return to Celtic?

Erik Sviatchenko of Celtic celebrates victory during the Betfred Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It’s been less than a year since Erik Sviatchenko left Paradise, but the Danish defender remains a popular figure among Celtic fans.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a two-year spell at Celtic until returning to former club FC Midtjylland last January after falling down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers.

But would Sviatchenko, who joined the Danish side permanently in May for £1 million [The Record], fancy a return to Parkhead? Going by his Twitter activity, maybe.

One Celtic fan tagged the centre-back in a tweet about the Hoops re-signing him – and the player himself ‘liked’ the post.

This hardly represents conclusive evidence that he would jump at the chance to re-sign for the Scottish Premiership giants, but stranger things have happened and Rodgers might need an additional centre-back come January.

Dedryck Boyata is out of contract next summer and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if the Belgian were to court interest from other clubs when the transfer window opens.

Manager of Celtic Brendan Rodgers celebrates with fans the Betfred Cup Semi-Final at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

If Boyata leaves, Rodgers will only have Filip Benkovic, Jozo Simunovic, Kristoffer Ajer and Jack Hendry as centre-back options, but Sviatchenko is good enough to partner Benkovic and reassert himself as a first-team regular.

At this moment in time it seems unlikely, but the Northern Irishman only offloaded Sviatchenko because Marvin Compper and Hendry were coming in, but fast forward 11 months and it’s clear that Celtic took a big step backwards in that regard.
