Should Celtic challenge to re-sign Erik Sviatchenko?

Brendan Rodgers made a few mistakes at Celtic.

Quite a few of them centered around players who he brought in, but one big mistake relates to one man he let go.

Eighteen months ago, Rodgers let Erik Sviatchenko re-join Midtjylland. It didn’t seem a travesty at the time because, after all, they had just signed Marvin Compper, a Germany international, and prosperous centre-back Jack Hendry as replacements for the Denmark international.

Fast forward a year-and-a-half and neither of those two are anywhere near as good as Sviatchenko and, with the big defender reportedly available again, should Neil Lennon bring him back?

According to Karadeniz Gazette in Turkey, Trabzonspor want to sign Sviatchenko and Midtjylland may only want around £2 million for him.

This is a player who doesn’t turn 28 until October and therefore still has many years left in the tank.

Celtic need a few new centre-backs after losing Dedryck Boyata on a Bosman, while Filip Benkovic is headed back to Leicester City for now.

Considering Hendry and Compper managed 15 Premiership games between them over the past 18 months, neither of them are going to seriously challenge Kristoffer Ajer or Jozo Simunovic next season.

Looking back, it was really an inexplicable decision by Rodgers to offload him, given the calibre of his replacements, but Lennon should right those wrongs and bring him back.
