Erik Spoelstra has praised the progress of one of his Miami Heat players, recognising the challenge he now poses to opponents.
The Heat have put together a solid start to the campaign, moving to 3-1 after their victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Jaime Jaquez Jr. stood out in that win, putting up 27 points in what turned into a comfortable night for Miami.
Before the season, Spoelstra had pushed Jaquez Jr. to tidy up aspects of his game and become a more reliable contributor. Jaquez Jr. has responded well, showing clear improvement from last year, and Spoelstra has been quick to acknowledge the changes.
Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s playmaking is causing headaches for defenders, according to Erik Spoelstra
Following Miami’s win over Charlotte, Spoelstra highlighted how Jaquez Jr. has taken steps forward as a playmaker.
Jaquez Jr. has always been able to get to the rim and put up points, but now it’s his passing that’s really standing out. Defenses are having a tough time keeping up because he’s making plays for others.

“Other than a couple of times, it just felt like so much of what he was doing was in the flow of how we’re trying to play. That certainly highlights some of his downhill ability.”
Spoelstra went on to highlight how this year has looked different for Jaquez Jr., who seems more comfortable in those moments.
“The difference this year is that he’s keeping them a bit more honest. If you don’t, he’s a handful in a one-on-one.”

Jaquez has opened the season by averaging 18.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game — solid numbers that show how much he’s grown.
Now in his third year in the league, Jaquez is starting to look like the player Miami hoped he would become when they selected him in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft.

Spoelstra has pushed Jaquez hard over the past year, but that approach seems to be paying off, helping him find his footing early this season.
The Heat are already seeing good returns from their young players, with several stepping into bigger roles and contributing more than expected early on.
