Heung-Min Son is still not fully fit and Tottenham Hotspur need creativity. The onus will be on the Argentine to continue producing solid form.
Tottenham find themselves at a mini-crossroads heading out of the international break.
The north London side have enjoyed an encouraging start to the season and memories of a 4-1 win against Manchester City will be fresh.
But a couple of draws or worse could see momentum peter out and, at this stage, will be the difference between building a solid run and just trudging by until the next big occasion.
And that could leave Erik Lamela in a position of great importance at White Hart Lane…
| Position | Team | Chances Created | Minutes Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Erik Lamela | MF | Tottenham | 19 | 367 |
| Nacer Chadli | MF | Tottenham | 17 | 602 |
| Christian Eriksen | MF | Tottenham | 12 | 362 |
| Harry Kane | FW | Tottenham | 11 | 685 |
| Ben Davies | DF | Tottenham | 8 | 630 |
| Ryan Mason | MF | Tottenham | 8 | 364 |
Indeed, as Opta stats show, the Spurs forward has created more chances than anyone at the club so far this term, despite playing just 367 minutes. His form, meanwhile, has finally shown what he is capable of. It’s just a matter of keeping it up.
That’s something he really has to do, not just for his sake but for the Tottenham side as a whole. Heung-Min Son is not yet fully fit, while Christian Eriksen’s contribution is always invaluable in the capital.
But, if Lamela can produce in Son’s absence and then work in tandem with Eriksen and Son, Tottenham will truly intimidate opposition back fours. The 23-year-old can also act as a key to ‘unlock’ Harry Kane.
As the final piece of Mauricio Pochettino’s jigsaw, then, Lamela will be very important indeed at Spurs in the coming weeks. Arguably their most important player right now.
