Celtic defender Mikael Lustig will miss Sweden’s match against Belgium at Euro 2016, says Erik Hamren.
Sweden national team head coach Erik Hamren has told Deadline News that Mikael Lustig will miss their final group game at the ongoing Euro 2016 finals in France.
The Celtic defender suffered a groin problem during Sweden’s opening Group E match against the Republic of Ireland. The right-back picked up the injury just before half time and was substituted.
The 29-year-old missed Sweden’s game against Italy last week which Hamren’s side lost 1-0.
Hamren has revealed that Lustig will not feature for Sweden when they take on Belgium in Nice in their final Group E encounter on Wednesday.
The Sweden head coach has claimed that unless his side progress to the knockout stages of the competition, the Celtic defender will not feature in the 2016 European Championship anymore.
“The status of Lustig is that he is getting treatment and we’re working on him, but it is likely that he does not play anymore in the group stages,” Hamren told Deadline News.
“We would have to progress in the tournament if he is to have any chance to play, then there is the possibility.”
Lustig is a good player, and he will be disappointed at not being able to play for Sweden against Belgium on Wednesday.
Sweden are third in Group E at the moment with just one point from two matches.
Italy are currently at the top of the group with six points from two games, while Belgium are three points behind them in second.
Hamren’s side can still finish second in the group and qualify for the last-16 stage of the prestigious European competition, but Belgium will head into the match at the Allianz Riviera in Nice as favourites.
