If the widespread reports are to be believed, Manchester United are considering making a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Eric Dier.

The 23-year-old signed a five-year £50,000 a week deal at Spurs last September, but according to reports from The Mirror, Jose Mourinho is still prepared to lodge a £40 million bid for the versatile midfielder.

Spurs moved early this season to tie several of their key players on a long-term deal, and now warns that they cannot expect further pay rise just because other clubs are interested in them.

Dier has a big decision to make this summer.

He is an established footballer at Spurs and has developed his all-round qualities under Maurico Pochettino. The club have made him the star he is today and by handing him a long-term contract, have shown great faith in his ability.

However, in football, loyalty seldom exists. United can offer him more than double his current wages, which should be tempting for any young footballer.

The most important thing is Mourinho can give him a regular role in central midfield. At Spurs, Dembele and Wanyama are Pochettino’s first choice midfield pair, and Dier has been often used as a central defender in a three-man defence.

He is certain to start regularly at Spurs, no doubt, but is he certain to start regularly in midfield? No. It will also hamper his chances of anchoring the midfield for his country, should he continues to play in other positions.

Dier has the platform ahead of him to perform in big European games with Tottenham once again playing in the Champions League next season.

Manchester United may or may not qualify for the Champions League next season. In case they do, they will have a greater pulling power to lure Dier away from the north London club.
