Eric Dier wore the armband for Tottenham Hotspur in their latest outing.

Eric Dier has told the Hamstead and Highgate Newspaper that he wants to become Tottenham Hotspur captain in the future.

Dier wore the armband during Tottenham’s FA Cup clash with Aston Villa in his side’s most recent outing.

And the 22-year-old admits that he would like to lead his side out more often, as he gains more experience as a player.

Tottenham's Eric Dier looks dejected after the game

“I hope so, maybe one day,” he said. “We have some fantastic captains here at the moment but I’m still young. Hopefully one day maybe I will get that honour, but I’m focused on playing for Tottenham, nothing else.

“I like to think [leadership] comes naturally to me, it doesn’t affect me. When I was younger going through age groups at Sporting Lisbon I was captain, it’s not something new to me. But I’m not the man to tell you if I’m a good captain or not – other people are.”

Dier has already been identified as a player who could not only captain Spurs in the future, but England too.

The former Sporting Lisbon man, who can play in central defence or defensive midfield, has shown exemplary attitude ever since breaking into Tottenham’s first-team.

Dier now plays a key role for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but Hugo Lloris is in possession of the captaincy at Spurs at the moment.

The England international has been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich recently (The Guardian), but his latest comments suggest that he plans to stay at White Hart Lane for a long time yet.

With Dier wearing the armband, Tottenham picked up a 2-0 victory over Villa to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
