Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has told The Telegraph that he was given words of advice from Mauricio Pochettino before captaining England.
Whilst the likes of Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Harry Kane missed England’s friendlies over the international break, Dier was a key part of Gareth Southgate’s squad – and he was given a huge honour.
The Spurs star was handed the captain’s armband against both Germany and Brazil, giving him the chance to step up and become a leader in a youthful England side.
Dier captained England to two 0-0 draws whilst featuring as a midfielder, and he will hope to have put himself in contention to be named England captain on a regular basis moving forward.
Whilst it’s back to Premier League action this weekend as Spurs travel to take on Arsenal in the North London derby, Dier will still be on a high from his international break – and he has discussed his experience.
Dier has told The Telegraph that he has received a lot of nice messages over the last week due to his captaincy, from his family and close friends, as well as Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Dier revealed that Pochettino messaged him some advice, telling him to try and enjoy the experience of being captain rather than piling pressure on himself – and he attempted to take his manager’s words on board.
“I’ve had lots of nice messages,” he said. “The manager messaged me. For me, the most important thing is the people that are close to me: the manager, my family, my close friends, what they say, them messaging me. That’s all I need, really.”
“I spoke to the manager and he had some good advice for me, just to enjoy it. I tried to do that,” he added.
