Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has told the club’s official website that he believes Jan Vertonghen is the best centre-back in the Premier League, after the Belgian was named in the PFA Team of the Year.

In the absence of Toby Alderweireld, 31-year-old Vertonghen has struck up a perfect partnership with Davinson Sanchez at centre-back and it has seen the former Ajax defender recognised for his efforts.

The 2017-18 campaign has arguably been Vertonghen’s best season in a Tottenham shirt since moving to north London from Ajax in 2012, as he adds class and maturity to a natural talent for defending.

Dier, who has moved into holding midfield away from centre-back due to Vertonghen’s form, is modelling himself on Vertonghen who he believes is better than the likes of Vincent Kompany, Alderweireld and Virgil van Dijk.

“You can improve every year until you retire,” Dier said. “If you look at the standard Jan Vertonghen is playing at now, it’s incredible.

“He’s the best centre-back in the Premier League. He’s just turned 31. You can constantly improve and constantly get better and I’ve got to keep trying to do that.”

Doubts remain over the long-term future of Vertonghen, with only a year left to run on his current contract which the Daily Star believe is worth £100,000 a week.

However, Football London claim Spurs are looking to change that by offering him a new deal, with no extension clause in his current deal. Vertonghen is likely to start on Monday night, as Spurs play host to Watford.
