Spurs face AS Monaco in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier has told reporters, as quoted by the Daily Star, that playing at Wembley Stadium will be a big advantage for the club for several reasons in the Champions League.
Spurs host AS Monaco in the first of group-stage fixtures on Wednesday, with European games being played at the national stadium instead of their White Hart Lane home.
Whether that will serve as a boost or a hindrance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side has been the subject of some debate ever since the deal was announced.
Dier, though, appears to be left in no doubt that it will be an advantage for the North London side as they return to Europe’s top competition.
The midfielder, who signed a new five-year deal at the club on Tuesday, believes the larger crowd and bigger pitch will both help Spurs’ cause.
Dier said, as quoted by the Daily Star: “It’s going to be fantastic. We’re excited to be in the Champions League and it’s very special it’s at Wembley. Hopefully we can create some great new memories for Tottenham fans.
“I think Wembley is an advantage. It’s a special stadium. We’re excited to play there because of all the history that comes with it. I think everyone will enjoy it. It’s a bigger stadium. There’s more fans. The atmosphere will be fantastic because there will be 85,000 Tottenham fans there.
“I hope the pitch being a bit bigger helps us too. I think it can be a benefit for us. We got a good amount of tickets and hopefully everyone’s friends and family will be able to be there.”
Though the main reason for concern about the move has been that Spurs players will not be used to the pitch at Wembley like they are at home, the club does at left has several players with experience of playing there.
Dier, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, and Harry Kane are all current England regulars and as such have played at the national stadium on numerous occasions.
