Former Premier League ace Danny Mills has warned that Eric Dier faces a battle to get back into the Tottenham Hotspur team.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Mills said that Tottenham’s success against Manchester City without Dier will make it difficult for him to command an automatic spot in the XI.

Mills, also an ex-England international, said: “Dier might not even get back in the side. They have got a very strong midfield.

“Is Dier as good, as athletic [as their other options]? Possibly not.”

Mills is referring to Tottenham’s new summer signings, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko, who have each made a positive impact at the club since arriving in the transfer window.

Both players started the 2-0 win over the Premier League leaders, with Dier named on the bench.

Dier was the surprise story of last season at Tottenham, establishing himself as a first choice midfielder, consigning Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason to being moved on by the club.

There is no danger of the same fate happening to Dier, whose long term future is at Spurs, especially considering his versatility.

It is for this reason that Dier should fancy his chances of breaking back into the Tottenham team before long, even featuring at full-back in the recent win over Sunderland.

With the Champions League to balance with the Premier League, as well as an upcoming EFL Cup clash against Liverpool, the strength of Tottenham’s squad will begin to show, and Dier is likely to benefit from his brief rest, having played non-stop at club level and for England over the past 12 months.
