Eric Dier is caught between a rock and a hard place at Tottenham Hotspur.
Eric Dier could be in trouble at Tottenham Hotspur this season – big trouble.
Spurs are on the brink of a record-breaking deal to sign Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in a signing that would undoubtedly impact Dier’s playing time in North London.
In addition to that, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino also has Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama.
When Ndombele comes, Dier will be so far down the pecking order that there’s only one logical option and that is to leave the club – but there’s a catch and here it is.
Despite being surplus to requirements, Dier is still an asset for Tottenham financially speaking. They could easily get between £25 million and £30 million for him, whereas two years ago it was £50 million.
Problem is, the Premier League clubs that could do with someone of Dier’s talents won’t be able to afford him, and the ones that can afford him, a West Ham United or an Everton for example, don’t need him.
The England international is between a rock and a hard place and ,if he stays with Pochettino’s side, it could be a truly horrible season for him in terms of not playing.
Dier’s waning importance can be measured by the fact that he is consistently starting less and less Premier League games each season. Last year it was only 18 and next term it’ll be significantly less than that.
It should be noted that he can also play centre-back but, barring a horrendous injury crisis, he’s not going to get a game for Tottenham there either.
Considering Pochettino only spent £4 million on a player who was worth 13 times that a couple of years ago, Dier is still one of the Argentine’s cleverest signings, but he’s never been more on the periphery of things than he is now and unless he goes abroad, it’s going to be a long season for the former Sporting starlet.
