Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has made his feelings clear on Twitter following penalty controversy during Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at Wolves on Sunday.

Aston Villa felt they should have been awarded a second-half penalty when ex-Spurs man, Matt Doherty, pushed Ollie Watkins in the box as he tried to shoot.

It was pretty clear that the returning Wolves right-back stopped Ollie Watkins from having a clean shot on goal, as his effort, in the end, was scuffed and hit the side netting.

Both the on-field referee and VAR agreed that no foul was committed, but it’s something that Eric Dier clearly disagrees with on Twitter.

That incident was discussed on Sky Sports over the weekend by ex-referee Dermot Gallagher, with Matt Doherty responding by saying ‘never’.

And his former Tottenham teammate responded to that tweet with a simple one-word message as you can see below.

Aston Villa’s penalty shout valid

The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer, Alan Shearer, might have had his striker’s hat on, but he felt that Villa were unlucky and a penalty should have been awarded.

At the end of the day, Watkins was denied the chance to have a clean effort at goal and Doherty knew what he was doing.

It could have had a big bearing on the game given the end result, but on-field referees and VAR have made far bigger mistakes this season, in comparison to the one from Molineux.
