Daniel Levy loves to spring a surprise or two on transfer deadline day and the Tottenham Hotspur chairman didn’t disappoint again.
Not many expected it, but Matt Doherty’s contract at Tottenham was terminated with less than one hour remaining of the winter transfer window, with the Republic of Ireland international then joining Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid.
Eric Dier, who grew close with Doherty during their time at the club, posted on his Instagram story ‘Let’s go, Dohertinho’ when reacting to last night’s news.

It’s perhaps not a surprise that Doherty has left Spurs because of Pedro Porro’s arrival from Sporting Lisbon, but no-one expected such an abrupt end.
Plus, there will be some who feel that Emerson Royal should have been the one making way, not Doherty.
Nonetheless, the 31-year-old follows in the footsteps of a certain Kieran Trippier and becomes yet another Spurs right-back to work under Diego Simeone.

PORRO UPGRADE
It’s all about looking forward for Spurs now and trying to fix an area of the pitch that has been a problem since Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier left.
From Serge Aurier, who also saw his own contract ripped up before he left, to Southampton’s thriving star, Kyle Walker-Peters, many names and faces have played that right-back or right-sided wing-back role, yet struggled to put in consistent performances.
With Porro being an upgrade on every single one of those players, Spurs fans will be hoping their fortunes now finally change.
