Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier comments on Everton summer signing Wayne Rooney’s decision to retire from the England football team.
Rooney recently announced his decision to quite playing for the England national football team at the age of 31.
The former Manchester United forward, who has also operated as a midfielder, made his debut for the Three Lions back in 2003.
The 31-year-old, who returned to his former club Everton in the summer transfer window after leaving United, scored 53 goals in 119 matches for England, according to BBC Sport.
Dier, who can operate as a midfielder and as a defender, has admitted his disappointment at Rooney’s decision to retire from England duty.
The 23-year-old, who has been part of the England senior set-up since 2015, has revealed how Rooney made him welcomed when he initially started playing for the Three Lions.
Dier moved to Premier League Spurs from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £4 million.
“The thing I remember most about joining up with England as a new young player was how brilliant Wayne was at making us feel welcome,” Dier told The Guardian.
“You never really imagine when you come away with England that Wayne Rooney will be looking out for you, but that’s the way it was.
“That’s the kind of thing most people don’t get to see so much and Wayne will be missed in that sense as well as on the pitch.
“I’m sad to see him go because he’s been fantastic and it feels like the end of an era, but there aren’t many of his generation left any more.”
