Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has hit back at criticism of the club’s lack of spending in the summer transfer window, according to comments published in The Guardian.

Spurs did not sign any player in the summer transfer window, and Dier – who can operate as a defender or as defensive midfielder – has hit back at those suggesting that the North London outfit should have strengthened their squad.

Dier told The Guardian: “I always see now, when big teams are doing badly, people say they need to spend another £200m or £300m. I just think it’s crazy.

“People are looking at the wrong things if they think they need to spend money to change things. For me, people use it as an excuse.

“It’s just my personal opinion, but I think we are a good example because we have had to find different ways to achieve the same results as other teams. I think in the long run we will be in a better position for it.”

Tottenham did not, but the North London outfit do have a settled and strong starting lineup.

It is hard to see who Spurs could have signed who would have slotted immediately into manager Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup, especially given that they do not like to spend big money.

Spurs have progressed well over the past few years, and there is no need for change to move away from the structure which has been successful for them.

Dier has been on the books of Tottenham since the summer of 2014 when he joined from Sporting Lisbon for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £4 million.
