Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier has told The Guardian that Barcelona paying almost £100 million for Ousmane Dembele is not the youngster’s fault.

Spanish giants Barcelona signed Dembele from German club Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.

According to The Guardian, Barca had to pay Dortmund an initial transfer fee of £97m, with a potential £38m in add-ons, in order to secure the services of the France international.

As reported by the publication, the 20-year-old forward is the second most expensive footballer in the world after Neymar.

Paris Saint-Germain signed the Brazil international forward from Barcelona in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £200m.

Tottenham midfielder Dier, who can also operate as a defender, has said that Dembele’s transfer fee is not his fault.

The 23-year-old England international joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £4m.

“It’s where the industry is,” Dier told The Guardian. “I’m not saying I agree with it, but it’s not Dembélé’s fault that he’s good at football and someone is willing to pay that sort of price.

“Footballers have no say in what sort of money changes hands, that has more to do with people way up the food chain.”
