The Tottenham Hotspur star has always had belief in his ability but is surprised at how quickly success has come.

One of the big success stories at Tottenham Hotspur in recent years has been the development of Eric Dier. Since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon he has become a regular starter for Spurs in several different positions and an England international. In particular it has been the last 12 months, since moving into a central midfield position, that he has truly come to the fore.

The Spurs player has been speaking about his excellent recent rise to Sky Sports this weekend. He admitted he was shocked at the timeframe it has taken for him to improve in this way – but insisted to Sky Sports he always knew he was capable of making it to his current level:

“I always believed in myself to reach this level and play for England. I always had that in my mind and it’s been my aim from quite a young age.

“When I was at Sporting [Lisbon] I knew there was a long way to go but I believed I could do it. For it all to come so quickly though, one after the other, I never expected it.”

Dier currently faces some of his biggest challenges since being at Tottenham. His midfield position is under threat from Victor Wanyama and he is only currently starting at centre-back because of an injury to Toby Alderweireld.

This is the biggest threat to his first-team place at Tottenham since becoming a regular under Mauricio Pochettino. But judging by the mental strength he certainly seems to possess it would be a brave man to bet against Dier’s success at Tottenham Hotspur.
