The Ivory Coast international has been linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer.

Nicolas Pepe

According to a report from French newspaper L’Equipe, Lille have opened talks with Angers about the possible transfer of young winger Nicolas Pepe. However, the same report claims Newcastle United remain very interested in a player with an £8.7million price-tag.

The 22-year-old can play as a winger or a central striker and he is tipped for a bright future in the game.

L’Equipe claims Newcastle are the English club that holds the most interest in the player. But with Lille allegedly starting the ball rolling with preliminary talks, the Magpies may have to act fast if they want to bring the Ivorian to St. James’ Park this summer.

Pepe is far from the finished article, as a return of three goals and two assists in 39 matches this season proves.

In an otherwise inflated transfer market, an £8.7million fee would not break the bank, yet Pepe’s signing would definitely be a risk for a Newcastle side that needs to get it right on their return to the top flight.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has a good record in the transfer window and needs to significantly strengthen in key areas.

The question is: Will he try a late swoop for Pepe or will he step aside and let Lille complete a move for a player who possesses the raw talent to become a fine winger-cum-striker in the years ahead?

Newcastle certainly have the money to spend, but with Christian Atsu secured on a permanent deal the wide areas may no longer be a priority despite Pepe’s versatility.
