Jose Enrique has claimed on Twitter that he is ‘very surprised’ that Newcastle United are about to sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie shared that Karius is to join Newcastle on a short-term deal after an ankle injury to Karl Darlow in training – the 29-year-old was released by Liverpool this summer.
Summer capture, Nick Pope, who has made an outstanding start to life at St James’ Park, is Eddie Howe’s undisputed number one, with Karius now set to join him in the goalkeeping department.
Martin Dubravka was Newcastle’s previous number one, before he was dethroned by Pope and now he has since made a loan move to Manchester United.
That put Darlow as the back-up option, but with his injury, it does leave the Magpies short of options and experience behind their main shot-stopper.
Either way, Karius isn’t remembered too fondly by Premier League fans because he produced that infamous horror performance during Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Unfortunately for the player, it has tainted his career and it’s something he has found difficult to recover from – in recent seasons, he has played for Turkish giants, Besiktas and German side Union Berlin.
‘FANTASTIC’ KARIUS PRAISED BY JURGEN KLOPP
Even though Karius went through nightmare moments in Liverpool colours, he was still praised by Jurgen Klopp, who labelled the 29-year-old as ‘fantastic’ in 2018.
More than likely, Karius won’t earn any minutes for the Magpies, unless, Howe decides to throw him in during their League Cup games.
Either way, if he is handed that chance again, on such a big stage, then he has a great chance to redeem himself because he still has years left in his locker to turn his career around.
