Jose Enrique has backed the idea of Fabinho potentially playing at centre-back for Liverpool, as posted on his Instagram page.

Liverpool now have three senior centre-backs on their books following the departure of Dejan Lovren, and dependant on injuries, a fourth option could be needed given the number of games the Premier League champions play.

Enrique was also excited about the Reds signing Jota, as he described him as an ‘incredible’ back up and a ‘perfect’ player for Jurgen Klopp’s system.

In the comments section, a Liverpool supporter stated: “Now we could use Fabinho as a centre-half sometimes couldn’t we, Jose?”

To which Enrique responded: “He can but for me his best position is centre defensive midfield. But it’s true if we need him, he can play there.”

BBC Sport have reported that Liverpool will be paying £41 million to Wolves for Jota’s signature, with the Portugal international able to operate on the left and down the middle.

Given that the Reds have now added depth at left-back, in the middle of the park with Thiago and now this move for Jota, it will be interesting to see if they sign another centre-back this summer.

The one problem Klopp will face in wanting to add another player in that department is that it’s very difficult bringing in a player who would be the fourth choice.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

The other difficulty facing Liverpool is that they may find selling clubs want that extra bit of money for their player just because they are the Reds and the current Premier League champions.

So, could it be a better option for Klopp to use Fabinho at the back, if needed, and keep Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as their only three centre-backs.
