Kieron Dyer has backed Carlo Ancelotti over his decision to drop Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The Italian made a brave call to axe the Toffees star today after what’s been a difficult start to the Premier League season for him.
Instead, the Everton boss gave a debut to new signing Robin Olsen for this afternoon’s defeat away to Newcastle United.
And Dyer has admitted that the former Sunderland stopper – a £30 million signing by the Goodison Park side in 2017 – simply hasn’t been good enough this season.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I just think his performances on the pitch just haven’t been good enough. He’s cost Everton a lot of points and Carlo Ancelotti has said enough is enough.”
The former Newcastle midfielder was speaking before Everton’s defeat at St James’s Park.
And Dyer’s comments look especially right now in light of Olsen’s performance.
Ancelotti’s side lost 2-1 but it would’ve been pretty grisly if not for the Swede, who pulled off a string of fine saves to keep out Steve Bruce’s side.
The Italian coach confirmed afterwards that Olsen would be keeping his place after passing this test with flying colours.
And for now there continues to be more questions than answers with regards to Pickford’s role in the team.
