Luton Town manager Nathan Jones has told Luton News that the Championship club are keen on signing Newcastle United wonderkid Elliot Anderson. A move might come about, after the arrival of Chris Wood.

Anderson, 19, has failed to add to his senior debut for the Toon – playing twice under Steve Bruce in 2020-21. But this season, he has only featured for the Under-23 side – though has scored five goals in seven games.

Indeed, the Scotland Under-21 star is rated highly at that level – and is now deemed ready for first-team football. That is, after scoring 16 goals in 31 games for the reserves. Luton are keen on bringing him in.

The Championship club’s gaffer was asked about a move to sign Jones – after the Chronicle reports that Newcastle signing Wood could see Anderson go on loan. Jones says Luton want the Newcastle star.

“There’s truth in it as we do like him. Rather than just be cliched and say nothing, we like him, we think he’s a good player, so do Newcastle. Are we close to signing him? No, no we’re not,” Jones said.

Jones on Anderson: Newcastle should send him to Luton

He has outgrown Luton, but is still some way off the first team. Anderson needs to go out and get game time, prove he can hack Championship level and then return to the club in the summer – and sparkle in the first team.

The connections between the clubs are also strong, given the presence of Graeme Jones on Eddie Howe’s coaching staff. It is a move that suits all parties, Luton benefit by having an exciting, talented player in Anderson.

Anderson hones his skills with some much-needed senior game time and Newcastle benefit in the long run, bringing back a better player.
