England’s win over Mexico isn’t just about reaching the quarter-finals, as it also has its own financial benefits for the FA.

England under Thomas Tuchel have had a rollercoaster ride of a 2026 World Cup campaign so far.

The Three Lions topped Group L by defeating Croatia 4-2, drawing 0-0 with Ghana, and beating Panama 2-0. Moving into the knockout rounds, they survived a scare against DR Congo, winning 2-1 in the Round of 32 thanks to a Harry Kane brace. A thrilling 3-2 victory over ten-man Mexico then secured their quarter-final berth against Norway in Miami.

These 4 need to be VERY careful vs Norway… rank them in importance of who England cannot afford to lose…

Yellow cards are reset after the quarter-finals

However, it hasn’t been straightforward, as the right-back position in particular has caused plenty of controversy, with Reece James injured, Djed Spence disappointing and Jarell Quansah getting sent off.

But, the important thing is that England have found a way to win, which now sees them prepare for a quarter-final clash with Erling Haaland and Norway that is set to take place on Saturday evening at 10pm UK time (5pm local time).

England’s prize money so far at the 2026 World Cup

According to ESPN, by defeating Mexico to advance to the quarter-finals, England locked themselves into the $20 million bracket. Even if they lose their upcoming clash against Norway, they are legally guaranteed that baseline prize tier as one of the final eight teams left in the tournament.

Teams eliminated in the group stage take home $10 million for finishing 33rd through 48th.

Surviving the groups but losing in the newly introduced round of 32 secures $12 million, while falling in the round of sixteen earns teams a $16 million payout from the prize pool.

England could cover Thomas Tuchel’s wages for three years

Of course, the FA are never going to use the prize money for Thomas Tuchel‘s wages on the whole, but the sheer amount that England will at least earn from the World Cup equals the same amount.

The prize money usually gets split between the FA and the players in the 26-man squad.

England manager Tuchel is currently on a wage of $6.5 million per year (£4.9 million), meaning over a three-year-period it will cost around $19.5 million, should he remain that long.

Tuchel signed a contract extension keeping him as England manager until 2028, securing his position through the World Cup and upcoming European Championship.
