The Tottenham Hotspur duo could be England’s version of Xavi and Lionel Messi.
For a few hours, after a surprising report from the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur fans were getting their head around the prospect of Harry Winks running out for Spain’s national side.
That suggestion has since been dismissed by Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague, who has clarified that it is Wink’s great grandparents, rather than his grandparents, who are Spanish, ruling out a potential call-up for the European giants.
But given the link to Spain, now is as good a time as ever to remind Tottenham and England fans that they could have their very own Xavi and Lionel Messi in the form of Winks and Marcus Edwards.
The links between the Argentine great and the Tottenham teenager have been doing the rounds for years, but the way Winks has been playing this season, he could grow into a player every bit as influential as Spanish legend Xavi.
Hyperbole is a dangerous thing in football, and given the age of the Tottenham duo patience is key, however few players possess the innate ability of Winks and Edwards, and if they fulfil their potential they could become superstars for both club and country.
The Three Lions have been crying out for such quality for years now, and while it will be a few more before Winks and especially Edwards will be ready to feature regularly on the international stage, that time will come.
Tottenham fans should be very excited, but so too should the England supporters who look set for another, even better, golden generation.
