Manchester City superstar and England international Keira Walsh is on the verge of signing for FC Barcelona, with the European giants close to a world-record €400,000 (£344,000) transfer for the midfielder.
According to Sport, the 25-year-old Euro 2022 winner has agreed to sign for Barcelona in a deal that smashes the previous world record for a women’s transfer, with that honour belonging to Chelsea’s 2020 move for Danish international Pernille Harder at a reported €250,000 (£215,000).
With Barcelona missing star player Alexia Putellas for the majority of the season, signing Walsh makes a lot of sense for the Primera Division champions, who this campaign will be keen to reclaim the UEFA Women’s Champions League after losing their title to Olympique Lyonnais in last term’s final.
Walsh started for England last night in their 10-0 thrashing of Luxembourg in a dead-rubber FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture for 2023, with the midfielder once again having an impressive performance as the Lionesses’ deep-lying playmaker which made her a household name in the summer.
Indeed, the 25-year-old had been linked with a move to Barcelona earlier in the window as reported by Sky Sports News, however, with the transfer window in Spain set to close today for women teams, City’s European rivals have seemingly made a big move at the final hour to get a deal over the line.
Barcelona signing Kiera Walsh for world-record fee is massive for women’s football

With women’s football only beginning to explode in popularity, it’s no surprise that the record fee for a player transfer is on the verge of being broken yet again, and for Barcelona, signing a player as big a Walsh is a huge step for the game in the long-term.
After all, the sport is only growing with each passing year, and with clubs like Barcelona willing to invest big in superstar players like Walsh, it is a promising sign that the record transfer fee in women’s sport will continue to get broken with each new transfer window.
