La Liga have launched an investigation into an alleged comment made by Jude Bellingham to fellow England international Mason Greenwood during Real Madrid’s clash with Getafe.
Table toppers Real secured a 2-0 win over city-rivals Getafe on Thursday, but there was an incident involving Bellingham and Greenwood in which the midfielder is alleged to have made a comment about the striker relating to previous off-field accusations against him.
Getafe reported the incident to La Liga, who are set to use a mouth-reading expert to determine the validity of the claims. The incident was caught on camera and went viral on social media.
La Liga statement
La Liga released a statement confirming they would be looking at the incident.
“Getafe filed a formal complaint with the La Liga match director who, as per standard procedure in such cases, has requested an expert lip-reading report to investigate the matter and act based on hard evidence,” the statement read.
Getafe boss Jose Bordalas confirmed at his press conference on Friday: “Everything is in the hands of La Liga now it is up to them. I ask for respect for Mason Greenwood.”
Greenwood is currently on-loan at Getafe from Manchester United, who he joined last summer. United confirmed that the 22-year-old could leave after they held a six-month investigation into his conduct.
He was previously charged with attempted rape and assault against his partner, but those were dropped in February. United did not release the player from his contract – which is due to run until 2025, with an option, and they instead loaned him.
Greenwood future
HITC understands that United will assess Greenwood’s situation in the summer when their new footballing department, being put in place by new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS company, will make a decision.
Greenwood has settled well into Spanish life and has six goals to his name this season and HITC understands that the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are taking a keen interest in his progress.
Bellingham for his part has been outstanding since his move to Real in the summer with 18-goals to his name since arriving from Borussia Dortmund.
