We rate England’s players’ performances during their 1-1 draw with Italy. Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Everton men impressed, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Southampton stars struggled.

Joe Hart (Manchester City) – 7

The goalkeeper pulled off a couple of fine saves over the course of the night.

Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal) – 7

Won’t have done his chances of displacing Everton’s Leighton Baines in the team any harm. Was solid in defence and posed a threat going forward. Should have scored in the second half.

Phil Jagielka (Everton) – 7

Probably England’s best defender. Dealt with everything thrown his way.

Chris Smalling (Manchester United) – 6

Performed to a decent standard, before his evening was cut short with injury.

Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton) – 5

Struggled to make an impression on the match, with his passing wayward. Seemed to be establishing his place in the team, but this will be a setback.

Phil Jones (Manchester United) – 6

Struggled in central midfield, but improved when moved back to a more familiar position.

Fabian Delph (Aston Villa) – 5

His passing was inaccurate throughout, and he cut a frustrated figure when taken off. Not at his best.

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool) – 5

Needs to become more of an influence in an England shirt. Anonymous again last night.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) – 6

Better when given a role as a striker, rather than at the tip of the diamond. Could have scored twice.

Theo Walcott (Arsenal) – 5

Didn’t have any impact on the game and is unlikely to keep his place for the competitive fixtures.

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) – 6

Not the dream first start that Kane would have been hoping for, but he did show flashes of quality.

Substitutes:

Michael Carrick (Manchester United) – 8

Changed the game after he came on with his passing. Dictated play and looked a classy operator throughout.

Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur) – 7

Continues to impress in an England shirt, his goal was very well taken.

Ross Barkley (Everton) – 7

A bright cameo from the Everton youngster, who will be pleased to have put in one of his better performances of the season.

Ryan Mason (Tottenham Hotspur) – 6

An assist on his brief debut. Will be hoping for further caps now.
