Roy Hodgson’s side conceded an injury-time equaliser as they began their Euro 2016 campaign with a 1-1 draw in Marseille.

Joe Hart 6/10 – Only needed to make two saves and couldn’t really do much about the equaliser.
Kyle Walker 8/10 – Tremendously active up and down the right flank, defending diligently and whipping in some dangerous crosses.
Gary Cahill 7/10 – Rarely troubled on the night, keeping the towering Artem Dzyuba in check with an uncompromising performance.
Chris Smalling 7/10 – Handled virtually everything Russia threw his way with minimal fuss, making a match-leading 10 clearances over the course of the 90 minutes.
Danny Rose 7/10 – Given few problems at the back and had some good moments going forward like his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Walker. It’s just a shame no one could get on the end of their deliveries.
Eric Dier 8/10 – Gave England the lead 17 minutes from time with a brilliant free-kick and protected the back four well all night.
Wayne Rooney 7.5/10 – Certainly looked at home in his midfield role. Sprayed the ball around the pitch in impressive fashion and forced a stunning save from Igor Akinfeev just before Dier’s goal.
Dele Alli 7.5/10 – Caused Russia some real problems with his vision in the final third and won the free-kick that led to Dier’s opener.
Adam Lallana 7/10 – Looked very busy and sharp throughout but probably should have done better with the two chances that fell to him. Still, he proved he deserved his place in the starting line-up.
Raheem Sterling 6.5/10 – Extremely bright in the first half but seemed to gradually fade after the break and struggled to produce a decent final ball.
Harry Kane 6/10 – The Tottenham striker had a few decent moments but flattered to deceive for the most part, failing to muster a single touch in the opposition box.
SUBSTITUTES
Jack Wilshere (Rooney 78) 6/10 – Had a few nice touches around the opposition area.
James Milner (Sterling 87) N/A – A late introduction as Hodgson tried to shore things up.
