England and the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) have both posted on Twitter following the sudden death of Grant Wahl.

What happened to Grant Wahl?

The respected journalist collapsed at the start of extra-time between Argentina and the Netherlands on Friday night, with early reports suggesting that he may have suffered a heart attack – those are, however, unconfirmed.

Wahl had only just celebrated his 48th birthday on Thursday with friends in Qatar while covering the World Cup, where he was also briefly detained earlier in the tournament for trying to enter a stadium wearing a rainbow shirt.

Wahl wrote on his website on Monday that he had been ill in the last ten days and was taking antibiotics for suspected bronchitis.

England and the USMNT have since taken to Twitter to share their condolences after the tragic news.

You can see the USMNT’s original tweet below, as well as the response from England.

Grant Wahl wife

Wahl’s wife, Céline Gounder, is an American physician and medical journalist who specialises in infectious diseases and global health.

In response to the awful news about her husband, the 45-year-old revealed she was in “complete shock” after Wahl’s death in a tweet on her personal Twitter account, which you can see below.

Wahl’s net worth is said to be $5m (£4m) – according to Lee Daily.

Grant Wahl receives tributes after sudden death

Wahl was a highly popular figure across the footballing scene, with thousands of tributes pouring in following his sudden death in Qatar.

Jesse Marsch – manager of Leeds – has paid his respects to his fellow American, with Tyler Adams, a United States international who plays under the 49-year-old in Yorkshire, also posting a message on Twitter.

Everybody at HITC Sport wishes to pay their respects to the Wahl family, and hope that Grant rests in peace.
