England beat Switzerland on penalties this afternoon.

England clinched third place in the inaugural UEFA Nations League today, beating Switzerland on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Guimaraes.
The Three Lions were beaten 3-1 by the Netherlands in Thursday’s semi-final, so were only playing for third place today in a frustrating game.
Gareth Southgate’s side hit the woodwork four times over the course of the 120 minutes, and even had a goal ruled out thanks to VAR as Callum Wilson’s goal was chalked off.
In a shoot-out full of high quality penalties, Eric Dier scored what proved to be the winner as Jordan Pickford – who scored a penalty of his own – saved Josip Drmic’s spot kick.
England celebrated third place, which was still something of a disappointment, but a fine exercise for Southgate and co as they continue to shape the England squad ahead of next summer’s European Championships.
One player fans may not want to see in EURO 2020 is Dier, who started the game in midfield and ended up captaining the side after Fabian Delph was substituted.

Spurs ace Dier may have scored the winning spot kick, but fans took to Twitter to blast his performance, suggesting that he was appalling and is stealing a living at the highest level.
Others don’t think Dier should even be in the England squad, never mind captaining the side, with some questioning just what he’s actually good at.
