Back in 2021, Arsenal and Tottenham were both keen to sign Dries Mertens, one of the greatest players in Napoli’s history.
Now, an interesting opportunity could soon arise for the Gunners or Spurs.
What’s the story?
Well, it was Voetbal24 who revealed that Arsenal and Tottenham wanted to sign the 103-cap Belgium international in 2021.
Now, the 34-year-old may be leaving Napoli for free at the end of the season.
As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Cristiano Giuntoli – Director of Football at Napoli – said: “We’ve an option to extend Mertens current contract until June 2023. We’ll decide together with Dries. We’re gonna meet at the end of the season to make a decision on Dries.”
In our view, that doesn’t sound convincing.
If both parties were interested in continuing their relationship, then it would be quite simple for Giuntoli to trigger the one-year extension.
However, the fact it’s now being discussed in the media suggests the situation is not as straightforward as that for Mertens and Napoli.
Arsenal and Tottenham should ignore Dries Mertens
It’s not every day that a player of this quality becomes available on a free transfer, so you could argue that Arsenal and Tottenham should go for it.
However, we think they should refrain from targeting the Belgian.
Mertens is an icon of the game, having scored 242 goals while also providing 180 assists throughout his career.
However, at the age of 34, he would probably only be able to offer Arsenal or Tottenham a couple of good seasons before he gets too old.
In truth, it could take him two years to settle in England, which would make a move even more pointless.
In our view, the Premier League duo should steer clear.
