Chelsea’s top brass have explained the decision behind signing Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

HITC had previously reported that Newcastle United were confident that they would complete the signing of Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, but the defender turned the club down and opted for a move to Chelsea.

Manchester United were also interested in the Fulham defender but because of the uncertainty over Erik ten Hag’s future, the Red Devils couldn’t push forward for a deal.

Enzo Maresca has taken the reins at Stamford Bridge and it appears the former Leicester City manager is set to have his first signing through the door in West London.

Chelsea explain Tosin deal

The future of defender Trevoh Chalobah is understood to be unclear and if the Englishman does depart, Tosin would be a more than capable replacement.

Chelsea’s sporting directors Paul Wistantley and Laurence Stewart have been quoted on the club’s website as saying: “We are delighted to bring Tosin to Chelsea. Throughout his career, he has showcased his maturity and defensive qualities and has gained a wealth of experience in the Premier League in recent seasons.

“He is ready to make the step up to Chelsea and work alongside the talented players in our squad. We look forward to Tosin joining up with us for pre-season.”

Tosin has made 45 top-flight appearances since Fulham’s return to the Premier League, helping the Cottagers finish tenth and 13th respectively in the past two seasons.

The former Manchester City defender will surely be an important player for the Blues in the upcoming season as they prepare for a campaign in the Europa Conference League.

Newcastle to look elsewhere

This time last week, Tosin looked to be inching ever closer to a move to St James’ Park but Chelsea decided to enter the race.

Just a week later, the club have announced the signing of the 26-year-old Englishman. Newcastle will instead turn their attentions to Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Like Tosin, Kelly is also set to leave his current club on a free transfer and Newcastle will be hoping to take advantage this time to sign the 25-year-old.
