Arsenal have missed out on the Premier League title despite beating Everton 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on the final day of the season.

The Gunners went into Sunday’s clash with Everton knowing that a victory may not be enough.

Manchester City’s midweek win at Tottenham Hotspur meant Pep Guardiola’s side entered the final day in top spot.

City got the job done with a 3-1 win over West Ham United, securing a fourth straight Premier League title.

Arsenal came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, but it just wasn’t enough.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz scored the goals for Arsenal, overturning a surprise 1-0 deficit to claim all three points.

Mikel Arteta message to Arsenal fans

There was immense disappointment in the Arsenal squad as the final whistle sounded.

Declan Rice and Oleksandr Zinchenko both looked gutted whilst Kai Havertz appeared upset as Arsenal just came up short.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta came onto the pitch after the full-time whistle and shared a message to the Gunners fans.

Arteta – as quoted by BBC Sport’s Alex Howell – stated that Arsenal’s improvements are because fans started believing in the team.

The Spaniard feels that Arsenal fans really had patience with the project and really began to understand what he was trying to do.

Arteta urged everybody to not be satisfied with a second-place finish, stating that Arsenal not only want more but are ‘going to get it’, promising tangible success moving forward.

“All this is happening because you started believing, you started to be patient and started to understand what we tried to do. All the credit has to go to the players and the staff,” said Arteta. “Don’t be satisfied. We want much more than that and we’re going to get it,” he added.

Arsenal finish second once again but this has been a season of progress.

The Gunners ended up four points better off than last season but just came up against a City side who didn’t slip up in the run-in.

Arsenal also reached a Champions League quarter-final, so there are things to feel very positive about after this season.

Arteta will now head into the transfer market hoping for reinforcements in the transfer market.

Declan Rice and Kai Havertz have made a real impact and more quality signings – alongside the returning Jurrien Timber – could see Arsenal displace City at the top next term.
