RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur ‘have the option’ to sign Timo Werner on a permanent basis following his loan move to the Premier League outfit.

Now, no one really expected Timo Werner to be particularly prolific in Tottenham colours. His penchant for wild, wayward finishes is well documented, after all, and the nature of some of his misses since returning to London in January is certainly reminiscent of his difficult spell at Chelsea a few seasons back.

But if you can overlook those wild swipes and those wasted one-on-ones, the good things Werner brings to the table can offset the glaring weaknesses in his game. The jet-heeled German is already a regular in Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI for a reason, offering the kind of pace, work-rate and versatility the Australian admirers.

Marco Rose has now confirmed reports suggesting Werner has a £15 million option-to-buy clause in his Spurs contract. And, for that sort of fee, the one-time Stuttgart starlet could be a solid if not spectacular addition to Postecoglou’s full-time roster.

“We are not in contact but, of course, I am following his development,” Rose tells Sky Germany. “He’s starting to score again. It’s a result of being comfortable and feeling good. He should keep riding the wave.

“Basically, he is one of our players. But Tottenham obviously have the opportunity to sign him completely.”

Good value for money at £15 million

Werner, despite the understandable concerns over his end product, now has four goals or assists in just seven Premier League appearances under Postecoglou. He’s scored in each of the last two games as well, helping turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 win vs Crystal Palace before playing a key role in last week’s 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa.

“I think Werner has been really important,” Postecoglou said before that trip to Villa Park while speaking equally glowingly about the in-form Brennan Johnson.

“I can imagine, if we didn’t bring (Werner) in, it would have been a much bigger burden on the other (attackers).”

Tottenham face London neighbours Fulham on Saturday. Another electrifying display from Werner and Johnson and Spurs could overtake Aston Villa into fourth, albeit until Unai Emery’s side take on West Ham less than 24 hours later.
