You would think if you aren’t good enough for Tottenham Hotspur, then the next step you take is one below.

That’s what everyone thought when Eric Dier was heading for the exit door in January, with Ange Postecoglou making it clear that Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were his starters.

But after leaving Tottenham, a move to Bayern Munich, where Eric Dier is now a starter, transpired as he recently helped the team to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

In Munich, Eric Dier is playing a high line, but as Tim Sherwood touched upon, that’s a reason why he left Spurs in the first place, as he told Premier League Productions (11/03/24 at 5:35 pm).

The former midfielder was speaking about the high-risk nature of football deployed by Ange Postecoglou and how the club’s current centre-backs can deal with it.

The pace of Micky van de Ven has been spoken about many a time, whilst his partner in crime, is a World Cup winner.

Tim Sherwood thinks Eric Dier and Cristian Romero are at the same level, when it comes to pace, but he thinks that ‘nasty’ streak in the Argentine and that willingness is what separates the two.

Cristian Romero and Eric Dier

“That’s why Eric Dier isn’t at the club anymore,” said Sherwood about Tottenham’s high line and defending big spaces.

“Whereas Romero isn’t the quickest. Him and Eric would probably be as quick as each other.

“But he is prepared to stay high up the field. He gets contact. He is nasty. He is street-wise and he is willing to be a partner to this guy (van de Ven), who just rescues everything. Look at him, the pace to get back in there.”

Eric Dier in Munich

When it comes to the Bundesliga, Bayern will likely end up missing out on the title to Bayer Leverkusen.

That really isn’t any of Dier’s doing because the 30-year-old did walk into a mess in January.

But there is every chance that the German giants win the Champions League. There are players in that dressing room who have those medals from the past.

Plus, Tuchel reached the final of the European Cup with PSG and did eventually lift that trophy with Chelsea, so there is every chance it will happen again.
