Michael Edwards is back at Liverpool and has immediately hinted that the Fenway Sports Group will be adding another club to their portfolio.

Liverpool have not only had to think about a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

The German’s departure this summer leaves an enormous hole, but Liverpool have also been seeking a new sporting director.

Jorg Schmadtke’s exit after the January transfer window left Liverpool with another issue to solve and a host of names have been linked.

Well, Liverpool have now gone down an interesting route as former sporting director Michael Edwards has joined the Fenway Sports Group – Liverpool’s owners – as their CEO of Football.

That means Edwards will now be in charge of Liverpool and he will bring a sporting director of his own, which we believe to be Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes

Michael Edwards drops FSG hint

FSG have now confirmed the appointment of Edwards in a major move for Liverpool’s future.

Edwards will return to Liverpool to run day-to-day business at Anfield, no doubt delighting fans in the process.

Intriguingly, Edwards has immediately dropped a hint about FSG’s plans moving forward.

Edwards has noted that one of the ‘biggest factors’ behind his return was FSG’s commitment to acquiring another football club.

Edwards feels that adding another club to the FSG portfolio is vital to their future and he would be overseeing that club alongside Liverpool.

“It was vital for me that, if I did return, it had to be with renewed vigour and energy,” said Edwards. “In practice, this means having fresh challenges and opportunities. As such, one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organization. I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary,” he added.

It sounds like Liverpool will have a partner club soon enough, joining the many multi-club models around the world.

Manchester City have really made this approach famous as part of the ‘City Football Group.

The likes of Girona, Troyes, Yokohama F. Marinos and New York City FC are all partner clubs with City and we often see players move between the clubs.

Chelsea now have Strasbourg as their partner club thanks to Todd Boehly’s investment whilst Ineos have added Manchester United to their portfolio alongside Nice and Lausanne-Sport.

It’s unclear who FSG will target to add alongside Liverpool, but Edwards hinted that it’s an absolute priority having secured his return to the Anfield scene.
