Jamie Carragher has praised Real Madrid for their work in the transfer market and how they have seemingly got one over on Manchester United.

Buying Real Madrid players before they are over the hill, especially ones who have played a key part in their success, would be huge for any club.

That’s exactly what the La Liga giants did when Casemiro and Raphael Varane moved to Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag’s stewardship.

But Jamie Carragher thinks Manchester United have been sold two players on the decline and they now ‘need replacing’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (06/03/24 at 7:20 pm).

The former Liverpool player pointed out that, when Casemiro and Raphael Varane were at the Bernabeu, they still seemed like top players.

But life has been mixed for the duo since their big-money transfers, mainly because Manchester United haven’t been able to progress as they would have liked.

Jamie Carragher did point out, from Real Madrid’s perspective, that it’s a ‘great skill’ to be able to ‘get rid of players at the right time’ and let those players ‘retire on somebody else’s pitch’.

From Real Madrid to Manchester United

“What Thierry (Henry) has mentioned there about getting rid of players at the right time, I don’t think there is anybody better than Real Madrid in world football,” said Carragher.

“Yes, they are probably the richest clubs, in terms of the best players in the world go there.

“But it’s a great skill, for any football club, to basically get rid of players before their legs go. Basically, let them retire on somebody else’s pitch.

“When you look at what they have done to Manchester United in the last couple of years, in terms of Casemiro and Varane, you look at them players for Man United and think ‘they need replacing’. You didn’t think that when they were in a Real Madrid shirt playing for Real Madrid, so that’s a great skill they have been doing for a long time now.”

Changes at Manchester United

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe entering the building, the footballing structure at the club is starting to change and it’s provided hope to the fans.

Will Man United be able to get Dan Ashworth on board from Newcastle United?

Sources have told HITC Football that Man United are hopeful of coming to an agreement with Newcastle for their sporting director.

If that happens, then it’s another tick in the box going forward for the team and more hope that the off-the-pitch decisions are far better and it changes the negative tide of the club.
