HITC understands that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have both decided to pursue a deal for Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old has spent the season on loan from Manchester United, who are keeping tabs on his progress as new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirmed last month., at Getafe.

The Spanish club, who are sitting 11th in the La Liga table, remain hopeful they could yet strike a deal for the England international.

HITC understands that Manchester United‘s plan is to sell Mason Greenwood this summer, but Jim Ratcliffe opened up the avenue of a possible return – which is nothing else, but massively strengthened the club’s hand in talks, as before that his suitors thought that they could back United into a corner and strike cheaper a deal.

Return to Getafe?

Talks are ongoing between intermediaries and HITC understands that the player himself has made it clear he would like to remain in Spain, where he has enjoyed a good season with Getafe.

From 26 games in all competitions, Mason Greenwood has scored eight goals and supplied five assists.

Getafe know the only real chance of landing him is likely through another loan, which Manchester United might consider if the permanent offers are not up to the level they want.

Another loan would also see Manchester United take up their option on the player – whose deal can run to 2026.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are advancing with their plans for next season, but both appreciate Mason Greenwood and regard him as one of the best young forwards in Europe and the chance of getting him, is one they want to pursue.

Despite winning the title at the Nou Camp last season, Xavi Hernandez will depart at the end of the campaign, as they are eight points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Barcelona should still secure Champions League football because they are eight clear, but Diego Simeone’s men, who sit in fourth spot with a five-point gap, are looking over their shoulders.
