Former Chelsea striker and BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has predicted Arsenal to beat Newcastle 2-1, and ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has backed the Gunners to win the Premier League match by the same scoreline.
Sutton told BBC Sport: “There was plenty of controversy when these two sides met at St James’ Park in November, including fury towards the VAR from Arsenal over Newcastle’s winner. That might mean there is an edge to this game, from the start.
“Arsenal were disappointing in their defeat by Porto on Wednesday, which surprised me a little, but Porto really disrupted them.
“Newcastle may well try to do the same thing but I am expecting the Gunners to bounce back. They were excellent when I watched them beat Burnley last week and the Magpies concede too many goals. including eight in their past three games, so I think Arsenal will find a way through.
“Sutton’s prediction: 2-1
“Jermain’s prediction: 2-1.”
My View: Arsenal will win vs Newcastle United
In my opinion, Arsenal will get the better of Newcastle United this weekend. I do not expect the Gunners to score three or four goals at the Emirates Stadium, but I think that Mikel Arteta’s side will get the job done in the end, especially with Martin Odegaard back in form.
Arsenal have won their last five Premier League matches and are only five points behind leaders Liverpool.
True, the Gunners lost to FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, but I do not think that it will affect them much against Newcastle.
Newcastle have won two of their last five league matches and have been rather inconsistent.
