A former Netherlands international is hoping to see the ‘exceptional’ Santiago Gimenez stay at Feyenoord after his agent admitted interest from a host of clubs including Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.

After drawing yet another blank in Feyenoord’s 1-0 win over RKC Waalwijk last weekend, the Mexican marksman has now failed to score in his last seven games, his usually laser-like sights still a little off.

His current form is certainly in stark contrast to Santiago Gimenez’s prolific displays from the other side of Christmas, the 2023 Eredivisie champion catching the eye of Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Inter Milan and co, according to his representative.

One particularly harsh pundit suggested that Gimenez is worth only 10 per cent of his reported £40 million price-tag these days. Former PSV Eindhoven talisman Danny Koevermans is keeping a ‘glass half full’ approach, however, backing Gimenez is prove the permanency of his class in the coming weeks.

Tottenham target Santiago Gimenez struggling for goals

“Just set him up. If he doesn’t score in the next game, he’ll score in the one after,” Koevermans tells Voetbal Nieuws. “I like watching him as a striker. He’s in a bit of a difficult phase right now, (but) oh well…”

Koevermans points out that Luuk de Jong, currently in the midst of a 28-goal campaign at runaway leaders PSV, has endured difficult spells in the past. He bounced back, and there is no reason why Gimenez cannot do the same

“He is an exceptional striker,” Koevermans adds, while praying that Gimenez extends his stay at De Kuip despite Tottenham’s obvious need for a new number nine.

““That goal will soon come with a rebound or a header, I have no doubt about that. He remains a very nice striker to watch.

“And I hope for Dutch football that he stays in the Netherlands for another year.”

Spurs want a striker

HITC Football understands that Tottenham are looking at strikers ahead of the summer window. Brentford talisman Ivan Toney is one option, with his contract expiring in 2025.

Gimenez, despite all the criticism that has come his way of late, still has 21 goals in all competitions this term. Three more will see him exceed his tally from Feyenoord’s Eredivisie-winning campaign last time out.
