Danny Murphy has praised Virgil van Dijk for the consistency he has showcased in Liverpool colours this season.

On Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp’s side, after an early scare, breezed to a 4-1 win over Luton Town at Anfield.

The relegation-threatened team took a shock 1-0 lead and went into the break thinking a major upset could be on the cards.

But Liverpool turned the heat up after the break, including Virgil van Dijk levelling the scores and Danny Murphy labelling his performance as ‘sensational’, as he told Premier League Productions (21/02/24 at 9:35 pm).

Amid injuries around him, that was Premier League game number 24 for Virgil van Dijk – he has only missed two matches through suspension.

Bearing that in mind, Danny Murphy feels the 31-year-old has only had one bad game this season and that was their away defeat to Arsenal.

Virgil van Dijk this season

“They needed that,” said Murphy. “They needed a goal from set-play or something like a set-play because everything else wasn’t happening.

“Van Dijk has been sensational this season, apart from the Arsenal game, we will let him have one bad one.”

League Cup final

As strange as it may sound, Liverpool’s League Cup final clash against Chelsea has come at the wrong time.

Klopp is currently dealing with an injury pile-up, with many key players out injured, but van Dijk stands firm at the back.

If the Reds have to go into the Wembley game as light as they were against Luton, then they will need another superman performance from van Dijk.

Yes, Chelsea have had their issues this season, but in recent weeks, things have picked up massively, including a point at Manchester City in the Premier League and their FA Cup win at Villa Park.
