Darren Bent has suggested former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper as a potential managerial candidate for Sunderland.

The former Ipswich Town and Sunderland striker has said that he is shocked that Cooper is still available.

So, what has Darren Bent said about Steve Cooper and Sunderland? Let’s take a look.

Steve Cooper tipped for Sunderland managerial job

Well, Darren Bent has suggested Steve Cooper as a potential candidate for the Sunderland managerial role.

The former Sunderland striker thinks that Cooper would be a good replacement for Michael Beale at the Black Cats.

Sunderland, who could lose Chris Rigg, have parted company with former Rangers manager Beale after just 12 matches. He replaced Tony Mowbray in December.

Cooper is without a managerial role at the moment after being sacked by Premier League club Nottingham Forest in December.

Sunderland, who sold Alex Pritchard in the January transfer window, are 10th in the Championship table at the moment with 47 points from 33 matches, four points off the playoff spots.

Bent said about Cooper and Sunderland on talkSPORT (4:39 pm, February 19, 2024): “It’s a big gig. It’s a big, big job that. Steve Cooper potentially, and the fact that he hasn’t got a job yet, I am shocked about.

“I did think that Steve Cooper would maybe get a Premier League job because I think he is that good.”

My View: Steve Cooper unlikely to take Sunderland job

In my opinion, former Swansea City and Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is unlikely to be interested in becoming the new Sunderland boss.

Cooper was in charge of Forest only until December. He has proved himself as a Premier League manager.

The 44-year-old Welshman guided the Reds to promotion from the Championship and then kept the team in the Premier League.

I do not see why Cooper would be keen on taking a step back and dropping into the Championship for his next managerial role.

Yes, I know that Sunderland are a massive club. And I understand that the Black Cats are just outside the playoffs.

But, Sunderland have sacked two managers already this season, and Cooper would surely look at that and be concerned.
