This is slowly turning into a very productive and strong season for Darwin Nunez after he helped Liverpool maintain their status at the top of the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s side dispatched Thomas Frank’s Brentford 4-1 on Saturday, with goals from Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.
It was the opening goal from Liverpool’s wild machine that caught the eye of Shaun Wright-Phillips and how it was very different to what he usually does.
Ever since Darwin Nunez stepped foot onto the Premier League stage, he has been dubbed a chaotic player who is all-action and a nightmare to play against.
But Shaun Wright-Phillips says, when he was put through on goal on Saturday, for the ‘first time’ the 24-year-old ‘slowed down’, then ‘took a breath’ before cooly chipping the on-rushing Brentford keeper, Mark Flekken, as he told Premier League Productions (17/02/24 at 8:05 pm).
That’s something you would normally associate Mohamed Salah with or even Diogo Jota, but it just goes to show that the Uruguayan star is learning from the best.
That’s why Shaun Wright-Phillips was keen to give Darwin Nunez his flowers after he scored his ninth Premier League goal of the campaign.
Darwin Nunez’s finish against Brentford
“The way Nunez plays, it’s quite 110,” said Wright-Phillips.
“But this is the first time I have actually seen him slow down, take a breath, saw where the keeper was, and he has most probably picked the hardest chance and the way to finish it, but he has dispatched it superbly.”

Liverpool injuries
Whilst the Reds are stacking up the points, the injuries are also starting to leave a bitter taste in the mouths of supporters.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is already missing and will be absent for the League Cup final against Chelsea, whilst Jota was worryingly stretched off and Curtis Jones also had to go off early, as reported by Sky Sports.
Alisson Becker was also missing at Brentford, but the hope is that his hamstring issue is less serious than the other injuries Klopp has to contend with.
Given that the three-way Premier League title race is at its most delicate stage yet, then the last thing Liverpool need are the injuries piling up on top of one another.
